Why you're not showing up on Google Maps
If you do good work but you're nowhere near the top of Google Maps, it's rarely because of one big problem. It's usually a handful of small signals that, together, tell Google your business is less relevant or less active than competitors who do less work than you.
The Map Pack — those top three results — is driven by three things: relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance is whether your profile matches what someone searched. Distance is how close you are to where they're searching. Prominence is how established and active your business looks across the web.
The most common gap is an under-optimized profile. The wrong primary category, missing services, a stale description, or no posts all weaken your relevance signal. Fixing these is often the fastest win — and it's free.
Reviews are the next big lever. Both the quantity and the recency matter. A business with fifty reviews from two years ago can rank below one with twenty recent reviews, because Google weights recent activity. A steady flow of fresh reviews signals an active, trusted business.
Consistency across the web matters too. Your name, address, and phone number should match everywhere they appear — your site, directories, and your profile. Inconsistent listings confuse Google and weaken your local trust signal.
None of this is a secret. It's a set of signals that need consistent attention, and that's exactly the kind of work that gets postponed when you're busy actually doing the jobs. The businesses that climb the Map Pack are usually the ones with someone keeping those signals active week after week.
